Of these, 6436 were patients with a diagnosis of anorexia nervosa, making up approximately half the hospital admissions, despite the BEAT (a UK national eating disorder charity) estimate that anorexia accounts for only approximately 10% of all eating disorders ( BEAT Eating Disorders, 2018). Anorexia nervosa is a growing problem in the Western world, with the most recent figures concerning UK hospital admission rates for patients with either a primary or a secondary diagnosis of an eating disorder reaching 13,885 in the year 2016–2017, almost double that of 6 years earlier (7620) ( NHS Digital, 2018).
